TODAY’S Singleton Argus is pretty typical of the land use debate that is firing up across Australia.
In the same newspaper, we have the announcement of a proposed $300million coal seam gas pipeline which will run through Dyrring, Mitchells Flat, Elderslie and Stanhope and the multi-million dollar success story of the wine industry.
International judge Chuck Hayward has plenty of clout when it comes to the American wine market and any opportunity to further secure that market is one the local industry will seize.
There is no doubt Singleton is in the heart of the state’s coal mining boom and the state’s people will want to tap into the power it provides.
But there is also the need to value the other successful agricultural industries, industries like wine making, and find a place so that future can be secured.
Land use conflict is an emotional debate and there is no doubt, that should that pipeline get approval, there will be more than a few households worried about exactly where that pipeline may go. It is good to see the company getting in early with community consultation.
