PROTECTION of the water table at Broke has been one of the community’s greatest concerns about the gas exploration project.
Water is crucial and a very precious resource that must be protected.
It should not be up to a community group to ask for an investigation when there is an obvious breach.
It should not be up to the community group to go to the expense of testing water and to try and ascertain what has happened.
When there is a breach of a condition of consent, regardless of the industry, the state government must react immediately and with a heavy hand.
There has to be a price to pay, some penalty otherwise what’s the point in conditions?
It is extremely frustrating for all involved when concerns are aired, then breaches are made and those concerns validated and still, there is little compassion or empathy, let alone reaction from the state government.
Saying sorry for damaging the environment, even if it was an honest mistake, is not acceptable. BHP is sorry for its mistake with the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster but that does little for the environment destroyed.
While some would surely scoff at the comparison, any damage to the environment, large or small is not acceptable, especially when this project is only in its exploration stage. The community want guarantees for the water and they should get them. This event does little to allay those original concerns.
