ANY assumption that the Singleton community may be complacent about its future was crushed by the incredible turn out at the coal and gas strategy forum on Wednesday.
The start of the forum was delayed as auditorium staff scrambled to get out more chairs and the long line of attendees waited in line to sign in.
Singleton and Muswellbrook residents were joined by people throughout the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens, Illawarra and Gloucester to send a strong message that it is time balance was brought into the coal mining and gas exploration debate.
People matter and many hundreds of lives are being directly affected by decisions made for and against the mining and gas industries.
While the future of this process hangs in the balance given the upcoming state election, no one can ignore the widespread call for control of an industry that could very well go mad through lack of legislation.
As Bruce McTaggart said, coal is the resource of all Australians and we should be the ones reaping the giant’s share of the profits.
