Action plans to minimise open cut mining impacts

26 Aug, 2011 10:14 AM
THE NSW Minerals Council has come up with an action plan to minimise the impacts of mining.

The action was determined at a stakeholder workshop in Singleton earlier this year and was released in a report yesterday.

Minerals Council’s deputy chief executive officer Sue-Ern Tan said there was some big picture thinking that has led to fresh ideas.

Steps include:

•Land use planning forum to consider how to develop a new synoptic plan for a more strategic approach to rehabilitation.

•Water forum to consider existing data on the region’s acquifers and surface water and what other information might be needed.

•Air quality and health information session to question government and industry research underway including debate on particulate matter and speciation monitoring, health risk assessments and discussion on the new pollution reduction programs.

•Weed blitz to control spread of noxious weeds.

•Improve access to information on existing mine rehabilitation.

•Advocacy for a greater share of infrastructure spending in the Hunter to attract government support for more major projects.

•Improve local training and employment opportunities..

The full report can be found on the NSW Minerals Council website.
