PLANS for the expansion of the Carrington West mine 24 kilometres north west of Singleton are still in limbo as Coal and Allied await a response from several state government agencies.
A NSW Department of Planning spokesperson said yesterday the exhibition period for the project had closed on November 5, 2010 and that the proponents had been asked to prepare a response to the issues raised in all submissions received to date.
“The department will consider all submissions received, including submissions received after the closing date, as well as the proponent’s response to submissions, during its assessment of the proposal," the NSW Department of Planning spokesperson said.
The Department has not yet received a formal submission from the Office of Water on the proposed modification to the development consent for the mine.
“However, the department has worked closely with the Office of Water during the process, including during the preparation of the Director General's Requirements.”
The project has received opposition from local residents and other interested parties concerned the mine expansion will have a negative environmental impact on the Hunter River and adjoining alluvial river plains.
Other concerns include the intensity of dust emissions from the mine.
It is expected both the Office of Water and Department of Agriculture will provide submissions to the Department of Planning regarding the mine project later this month.
