Coal forum

08 Mar, 2011 10:26 AM
NSW Minister for Planning Tony Kelly will be in Singleton tomorrow to address the community and stakeholder forum on the new NSW Coal and Gas Strategy.

Yesterday Mr Kelly agreed there should be some locations off limits to coal mining.

Agriculture in the Sydney basin, the thoroughbred industry and Pokolbin and its vineyards are just three Mr Kelly suggested when speaking with The Singleton Argus on Monday.

“I think it is justified that we look at that, there is a lot of coal in New South Wales and we will never get to extract it all,” he said.

He added that ramifications of any decision to slow mining would have dire consequences of places like Singleton in terms of employment and economic growth.

“The aim of the strategy is to develop a range of initiatives to provide greater certainty for stakeholders, communities, the mining industry and the environment,” Mr Kelly said.

The forum is being held tomorrow at the Singleton Civic Centre from 10.30am to 1pm.

People who want to attend need to register in advance by phone 1300 305 695 or at www.planning.nsw.gov.au/forums.

If at this late point in the Labour Governments tenure Mr Kelly admits that areas that currently support "Agriculture in the Sydney basin, the thoroughbred industry and Pokolbin and its vineyards " should be excluded from the impact of Mining why can't the same important & communities industries currently under pressure by his government's mining expansions in the mid & upper hunter have the same protection? and what set of official guidelines has the DPI used to guide them on what areas are environmentaly & socialy suitable for the establishment of more mines?

There nothing new here, if you don't live on the river flats on the fringe of Sydney or amongst the intense Wine Tourist centre at Pokolbin you can expect that at some time without warning your life will be sold to mining or gas interests.

And still no information on the future on what, when, where or who will cop it in the neck with a mining or gas field lease issued over your life.

This nice chat with the minister is restricted to the discussion on how to manage the process not to discuss if the process is biased or ad-hock or one side or kept secret from the communities effected.

Any miners or skilled trades could always shift to WA or Qld and the pay and conditions will be bettter than NSW !!!!

wouldnt it be logical to at least inform & invite the members of the mining industry community consultative committees if the Govt is indeed serious about obtaining stakeholder input?
