Kids on a mission

THEY are only four and five-years-old but already children at Skallywags Pre-School are doing their bit to help save our planet.

The pre-schoolers have set up an afternoon stall selling handmade cards to raise money so they can become a WWF sponsor, and help endangered animals.

Since reading Harry and the Dinosaurs Go Wild, a story about endangered animals, Skallywags room two pre-schoolers have put their best sales pitches forward and even raided their own money boxes so they can sponsor a panda and a rock-wallaby.

Since undertaking their ‘Save the Animals’ project, the class have raised $125.40 and will now adopt their two elected species.

Skallywags Pre-School teacher, Erica Wilkinson said staff had been blown away with the children’s level of enthusiasm and were also impressed with their sales approach.

“The children had their own spiel,” Miss Wilkinson said.

“They would ask parents when they came to pick them up, if they would like to buy a card or make a donation, and of course parents couldn’t resist,” she said.

Miss Wilkinson said the class had decided to sponsor one Australian animal, choosing the rock-wallaby and one international animal, the panda. Pre-schoolers decision heavily inspired by the popular cartoon Kung Fu panda.

Miss Wilkinson said the classroom project had a huge impact on children who had taken their learning from the classroom into the playground.

“We are hoping that we can teach the children about saving animals and making a difference to our world, by doing some little things in our lives and being aware of our impact on the environment,” said Miss Wilkinson.

“The sooner we start getting children to care hopefully the more they take it on board and hopefully do something later in their lives,” she said.

Miss Wilkinson said she had been surprised with the level of enthusiasm shown from the youngsters.

“The children haven’t stopped talking about it even at morning tea they might see a piece of rubbish fly away and they’ll all be like ‘quick, we have to stop that otherwise it will hurt our animals’,” she said.
