Message in the mo

AWARENESS is vital for survival and Movember is all about promoting the awareness of prostate cancer and depression in men.

Being in a primarily female dominated industry, Singleton Heights Public School teachers Andrew Clayton, Chris Swain and Terry Cone, decided to speak up about men’s health issues.

The trio have been working on growing and grooming their newly formed moustaches with the aim of reminding other men how important it is to get regular health checks.

Studies have shown that men don’t get regular health checks because they are scared it will lead to a hospital visit; embarrassed to discuss their health issues; find it too hard to see a GP because of limited opening hours; or just can’t be bothered making an appointment.

Their aim is also to get men talking to one another.

“Men are far less likely to talk to each other about health issues,” explained Chris.

Movember runs throughout November to raise awareness for men’s health partners The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Beyond Blue.

The unusual appearance of facial hair on the teachers has resulted in a few remarks - even some in approval of the change.

“I have tried to grow the ugliest moustache possible, but some have suggested it to be an improvement,” laughed Chris.

The three Mo Bros, as entrants in the fundraising campaign are called, have been surprised by the response they have had from students.

Terry explained that he has been surprised by just how many children knew what he was doing.

“The children know what Movember is all about and it was surprising that they know it was about men’s prostate cancer and not just men’s health issues,” he said.

With statistics that show that one in two men will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85, this awareness campaign is vital to help reduce this statistic.

“As teachers, and public figures in the community we felt that we have a responsibility to be making men aware of the importance of talking about their health,” Chris explained.

This is not the first time the teachers have been involved with Movember, with last year proving as successful and humourous as this year.

For some men approaching things with their Aussie bloke humour is the only way.

Most men will not sit down over a coffee and have a chat about things they are concerned about with their health - but give them something that provides the opportunity to have a laugh at one another and it can be a different story.

With other friends, outside of school, involved in the campaign Chris said it has been interesting to see how everyone reacts to the mo.

Just like humans, moustaches come in many different shapes, styles and colours.

“I have been surprised by the colour combination in mine, especially the grey,” laughed Chris.

Mo Bros have the chance to see each other’s progress on the Movember website and offer support to each other.

Not regular mo wearers, the trio were lacking some technique in the shaping department.

Movember started in 2003 with 30 participants and last year in Australia alone 125,000 mo bros and sistas were involved raising $8million for each of the organisations.
