A RECORD 780 participants from 48 teams took part in Singleton’s Relay for Life over the weekend making the event the biggest yet.
The 18-hour event, held on Saturday and Sunday, has raised $75,000 for the NSW Cancer Council with theevent’s committee praising Singleton’s wonderful effort.
The event kicked off on Saturday with Relay for Life patron reading an oath before local cancer survivors Mary Robinson and Jenny Barnett cut the ribbon to officially open the event with the survivors and carers lap.
“The survivors and carers lap was an amazing lap with participants watching and honouring survivors and carers for their courage, strength and victory over cancer,” said Singleton Relay for Life committee member Reina Stalker.
“It really motivated everyone to maintain a constant movement throughout the track for the entire 18-hours,” she said.
Mrs Stalker made special mention of local Steve Richards who she described as “inspirational” in his 18-hour feat of walking the track continuously.
“Steve was incredible, he walked with such great determination and conviction, it was certainly inspirational.”
Another highlight was the ever popular Miss Relay. Ian Hipwell took out the title with participants raising a staggering $2500 for their efforts.
