Opera in town

13 May, 2011 11:03 AM
SACRED Spaces, known for its quality music events, is about to reach new heights.

Amelia Farrugia, star of Opera Australia’s Manon, Fledermaus and upcoming production of The Merry Widow, will perform with Newcastle Festival Opera’s 30 piece orchestra in Singleton for one night only on May 28.

Ms Farrugia told The Singleton Argus she was looking forward to the experience of performing in such a spectacular venue.

It is her strong friendship and respect for Newcastle Festival Opera artistic director Ghillian Sullivan that brings her to Singleton.

The local performance is amidst commitments at Sydney Opera House with the Philharmonic Choir, a Gilbert and Sullivan production and playing alongside Andy Warlow in Fledermaus.

Amelia will perform pieces of popular opera and operetta including duets and other ensembles from Manon, The Merry Widow, La Boheme, Die Fledermaus, The Phantom of the Opera, Chess, The Pearlfishers, Rigoletto and many more.

“They are all songs people will recognise, the theme from A Room with a View and songs from Phantom of the Opera, it is a program that will appeal to all ages,” she said.

The accompanying cast includes baritone from Oz-Opera, Ashley Giles, as well as tenors Peter Willis and David Woodward, Alto Jacquelyn Brown and solo trombonist Colin Pritchard.

This incredible line up, backed by the 30 piece orchestra, is presented to Singleton by the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music in association with Newcastle Festival Opera.

The program is funded by Arts NSW through its regional conservatoriums grants program.

“It isn’t every day the local community can treat themselves to such a high quality opera performance in town,” said conservatorium director Adam Wills said.

“Amelia and Newcastle Festival Operat are here for one concert only, and as tickets are only $30 it won’t be long before the seats are filled, so please don’t miss this opportunity and book your tickets now,” he said.

Tickets are now available from the Upper Conservatorium of Music.

Adults cost just $30 and concessions $20. Phone or email today on 6541 4888 or email
