Telephone messages and email alerts are available for the 14 Upper Hunter air quality monitoring network stations.
The Office of Environment and Heritage chief executive Sally Barnes recommended the alerts to people susceptible to health impacts as the information would reliably inform them of poor air quality days.
The network’s advisory committee chairwoman Cathy Cole said: “Community members are able to sign up to receive free air quality alerts from a particular station, multiple stations or all 14 stations.
“If you are currently receiving alerts from the initial stations that came online, and would like to receive alerts from other stations, you should visit the website and update your subscription.”
The network aimed to assist future health and research programs and to assess the effectiveness of dust control programs aimed to improve long-term air quality.
Alerts are available through the website www.environment.nsw.gov.au/aqms/subscribe.htm.
