“THINGS are going to go wrong in life, but you just have to get back up and keep going.”
These are the words of Sam Bailey – who because of a tragic car accident at aged 19 is a C6/C7 quadriplegic.
He defied the odds and reached his dream of becoming a farmer.
Sam will be in Singleton next month with the love of his life Jenny to share his story with the community.
Sam will be in town on March 15 and 16 as the Singleton RSC High Schools’ Inspirational speaker with the aim of helping young people realise they can achieve things, even if they have had a bit of a rough trot.
Thinking the ABC program Australian Story was “scrapping the bottom of the barrel” when they asked him if they could do a story, Sam never imagined the change it would make to his life.
“We got an overwhelming response from people with phone calls, emails and letters and I started to realise that perhaps I did have a story that could give people a bit of hope,” he told The Singleton Argus.
Now Sam and Jenny are “criss-crossing across the country”, telling the nation Sam’s story.
When Sam and Jenny visit Singleton, Sam told The Singleton Argus he will be hoping the young people of Singleton will learn something from his story.
“For the senior students I will be a clear example of the tragic circumstances that can come from a serious car accident,” he explained as a preview for his talk with high school students.
“I couldn’t have got through it without support from my family, friends and community and I want young people to understand that they need to show appreciation for their loved ones.
“It is also about reminding people to appreciate what they have.”
One of the real Aussie characteristics about Sam is that he sees and treats everyone the same.
“You could be in the Hilton in Melbourne speaking to a room full of CEOs or in a remote country school that has a total of five students – at the end of the day when we all take our public hats off, we’re just people,” he commented, giving insight into the realistic approach he has to life now.
In addition to the senior student inspirational speaking appointment Sam and Jenny will also be visiting other areas of the community.
They will visit the Singleton School of Infantry, will talk to students at Singleton Heights Public School, St Catherine’s Catholic College year 10 students, King Street Public School, Singleton Public School and will be guest speaker at the Rotary 90 year celebration.
