FOR the first time, Singleton will have full strength representation at the Junior Touch State Cup.
Nine teams will travel to Wollongong to compete on February 18 and 19, 2012, in what has become the largest touch tournament in the world.
Around 60 clubs from across the state will compete in the event.
Singleton representative players have been training for the past two months in preparation for the event.
It has been no easy task to coordinate this first year, according to club president Michael Carroll.
Carroll lead a sub committee within the club to open up representative opportunities for Singleton players.
“It has been a huge job firstly getting word out there that we intended to go to state, attracting players and then trying to coordinate travel and accommodation,” Carroll said.
“We had around 30 or 40 players compete at state but because Singleton didn’t have representative teams the players had to earn selection in teams from nearby towns.
“We had one team compete at state about eight years ago but this is the first time Singleton will compete as a club,” Carroll said.
Many of the players have also had extensive representative experience through school and Carroll predicts the teams will do well.
“I am not anticipating huge results but we will get results,”’ he said.
Players were excited on Sunday to be handed their uniforms.
Singleton Storm is splashed across the red, black and white uniforms and the players certainly looked the part.
Mr Carroll said players’s costs had been kept down thanks to major sponsorship from Peabody Energy and Pirtek.
Additional sponsorship was provided by J Swan Mechanical, Howlett Civil and Mining Services, Coal & Allied and Safety Plus Training.
“We thank the sponsors for supporting the players, we certainly wouldn’t be where we are today without that sponsorship,” he said.
Players will discover on Sunday how they rate at a one-day carnival at Berkeley Vale.
