AS the old sport cliche goes winners are grinners.
This is certainly the case for Kirkton Public School’s mixed soccer team who are the New South Wales PSSA small schools champions.
The school were crowned State champions after a successful finals campaign in Sydney last month.
Heading down for the final round on October 30, the school’s mixed team was eager to get games underway.
Brimming with enthusiasm and full of confidence the team was hoping to consolidate their good form in lead up matches.
In front of a lively group of supporters, the team showed great skill and sportmanship to take their semi-final against Tintinhull 3-0.
The team were strong in both attack and defence thumping their opposition in a convincing scoreline.
Harrison Skinner scored two fantastic goals for Kirkton while Peter Loss also hit the back of the net.
The team then went on to face Rosebank in what was an extremely tight, nail-biting final.
Harrison Skinner again showed his skill with the boot notching up his third goal for the day, and the one and only of the match, to give Kirkton victory.
Final whistle Kirkton 1- Rosebank 0.
Coach Jamie Fairfull said all team members did a fantastic job throughout the finals campaign carrying out their roles on the field, supporting each other and showing great commitment to the task at hand.
The team approached the competition with complete dedication training weeks in advance before the highly anticipated State finals.
They had one aim - to come home State champions.
Kirkton Public School took the chance to thank their calm and committed coach, Jamie Fairfull, whose coaching contract has definitely been extended to 2010.
The school also wanted to thank parents who supported their children. It meant a great deal to our players.
Last but not least, the parents and citizen’s committee (P&C) who supported the team, covering costs of the bus to and from Sydney for both days.
This was appreciated by all families involved.
