 Delaney wins Ned Peters trophy

Delaney wins Ned Peters trophy

03 Jul, 2009 12:29 PM
ANOTHER near capacity field last Saturday cued up to compete in the annual Ned Peters Memorial Day and it was Club President Greig Delaney that won the day with a fantastic 41 points. Greig has certainly been on a huge high since winning the trophy and must surely have firmed as favourite to win this Sunday’s Singleton Open.

Greig also took out the C grade prize on the day but only by way of a count back from Trevor Pearce.

In A grade, Rick Janssen took on all before him with a super 40 points to continue his recent impeccable form. A new putter (shaft!) appears to have worked a treat and got him to the winner’s line ahead of Club legend Wayne Rutter. Wayne’s 40 points was unluckily counted out by Captain Col’s Calamitous Countback!

There were no surprises in B grade as the day’s biggest favourite, Tony Rock lived up to all expectations and returned a score of 41 points to win. In runner’s up position was Jeff Senior who has featured regularly on the presentation rostrum over the previous month.

Jenny Delaney managed to make the golf day a family affair by winning the ladies division. One can only imagine the tall tales that were told across the Sunday breakfast table at the Delaney residence! Mystery still surrounds the circumstances that led to Greig being unceremoniously dumped from team Delaney for Sunday’s mixed foursomes in preference for gun A grader Adam Ferguson!

There was a mixed bag of winners in the Secret 9 event. In first place was Jeff Senior, followed by Jason Burley, Ian Langdon and Fergus Hay.

Congratulations to Bob and Wendy Peters for their victory in the Mixed Foursomes Championship that was played last Sunday. Wendy’s steady play combined beautifully with Bob’s consistent and accurate iron shots to produce the victory.

What a massive weekend we have in front of us. The July Monthly Mug being played tomorrow is sponsored by club good guys Bill Thompson, Ken Lawson and Brian McHugh. On Sunday, the Pit Express Singleton Open promises to be a great event with over 110 players already committed to hit off. The time sheet for both these events are almost full so if you would like to play please get your name entered quickly.

The time sheet for the ‘Relay For Life’ charity day on July 19 is now on the club house notice board. Entries are now being taken for the annual Holden Scramble Ambrose event on the 23rd of August. All information regarding the day is available from Les in the Pro Shop.

Junior News

An earlier than normal hit off time failed to deter the regular Sunday juniors from playing in their weekly competition and the scoring was tightly bunched.

Brady Hay continued on his winning way returning a fine nett 30 and receiving another handicap reduction. It’s great to see Brady also venturing into the main men’s Saturday competition and all juniors are encouraged to make that step when their game is at a high enough standard.

Hayden Power seems to be living up to his name with his long and powerful hitting from the tee. He was placed second with a score of 31.

Coming into third spot was Keiren Nowland on 32. This Sunday’s junior comp is not being played due to Sunday’s Singleton Open.

All new junior players are welcome to join the competition. Any enquiries should be sent through to Les in the Pro Shop on 65724875.

BRANXTON GOLF

FORMER Singleton member, Greg Noble, won A Grade on Saturday with a fine 43 pts from the rejuvenated Mick Lawrence with 41 pts.

Both scores were indicative of the pleasant conditions on Saturday—although the course was playing long, the greens were very receptive following the recent rain.

Junior, Cameron Johanson, won B Grade with a very impressive 42 pts, on a countback from Keith Anderson, despite double bogeying the last hole.

Cameron is now getting much closer to claiming a new set of golf clubs from his father as he strives towards the 18 handicap mark.

Keith Bennett won C Grade with 42 pts from Cessnock member, Greg Weise, who played later in the day, with 38 pts.

All the winning scores were over 40 pts, an impressive feat!

The singles and doubles knockout draws are now on display in the club, so members need to check their draw and organise their game.

Anyone looking for a game of golf is most welcome at the Branxton Club. Just drop in for more information.
