Price dominates world race circuit

03 Nov, 2009 01:15 PM
MSC Kawasaki’s Toby Price can now call himself the fastest enduro motorcycle racer under the age of 24-years on the planet.

Price, 22, returned home late this week from Figueira da Foz, Portugal, where he contested the 84th annual International Six Days Enduro (ISDE) (aka the ‘Olympics of Enduro Motorcycling’) as part of the Wellard Australian Team.

Price was originally selected to represent Australia at the event - which ran from October 12 to 17 - as a member of the Junior Trophy Team (for riders 23-years-old and under).

However, injury in the Senior Trophy Team forced management to select the best talent from the Junior Team to step up to the seniors.

Price and his five teammates put in a commendable effort against the fastest enduro riders and nations in the world, missing out on a podium position by only 12-seconds after six grueling days of racing.

The Singleton rider was the highest placing individual Australian, finishing 14th Outright in the world and seventh in his class of competition (E2).

From the 443 entrants, Price was also the highest placing junior-aged rider.

“It is a good feeling, knowing I’m the fastest under 24 in the world,” Price said.

“Hopefully, if I can get across to Europe to do a couple of World Enduro Championship rounds next year, I can hopefully do well in them and that would be good.

“The under 23 class is a recognised world championship over there, so if I was able to get to all the rounds I could maybe win a world championship, which has always been my ultimate goal.”

Price said the trip to the ISDE was his first overseas.

“It was a big meeting, it certainly was a good experience to be a part of. Hopefully I can do it again next year, for the ISDE in Mexico,” he said.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, representing my country and trying to do well.

“I think I’ve done pretty well for my first time and hopefully improve on it from here.”

Price said the event, which is the longest and toughest enduro race on the planet, was the hardest race he had ever ridden.

Price is now making plans for his 2010 racing season and is in the midst of negotiations after receiving offers from Australian and European-based teams.

Price started his racing career in motocross and dirt track at the age of four-years-old and quickly moved up the ranks, landing factory rides and top podium places in MX and supercross.

The dedicated racer has had a fantastic 2009 season, winning the Australian Off-Road Championship, becoming the fastest junior enduro rider in the world at the ISDE and claiming second Outright in the prestigious Hog’s Breath Cafe Australian 4-Day Enduro (A4DE).
