Rugby League - ARL Masters

19 Mar, 2010 09:33 AM

All players and support staff had plenty of fun and most players got through the games unscathed with at one stage a record 14 Greyhound players waiting at the massage tables for a pre game rub.

Over the three day ARL Masters Tournament, the team played five games against a variety of teams including the Gold Coast Steelers, Gladstone Raiders, Western Rams who boasted some former NRL players in Paul Upfield, Hudson Smith and former Country representative Jamey Forbes, the Yass Yeppies and last but not least the old rivals of Greta Branxton Colts which was rumoured to be one of the toughest games of the tournament.

There was a bit of intertown rivalry between the Greyhounds and the Colts with no love lost and plenty of blood spilt during the game.

The Greyhounds let at least four opportunities go to waste in the first half and the Colts capitalised to go to the break one try up.

The Greyhounds waited until after the final hooter to bury the Colts heads in the grounds to score a 85 metre sizzler set up by Patty Ling and Tony Chalker and finished off by Paul Daniel. A terrific conversion by Darren Ward saw a great finish to a memorable three days of Rugby League.

Player of the Tour Troy Amidy led the way in the forwards and was well assisted by Jamie McWilliams, Peter Collins, Adam Whatham and Dean Rose while Scotty Stewart, Beetle Bailey, Captain Steve Richards, Darrin Stewart and the ever elusive and leading try scorer for the tour Al Harris all played well for the Greyhounds and have already booked there seats for 2011.

Shayne Brumby made a guest appearance against the Colts with some trade mark like runs and some bone crunching tackles which brought back old memories from the “Singleton Showground”.

Special thanks must go to the wives, families of all the players, support staff and sponsors
