REP CRICKET REPORTS
Under 16s
Singleton versus Cessnock January 29
Singleton’s Under 16 Representative cricket team was in action for their first outing of the new year last month.
With two regular squad members still enjoying the last days of their summer holiday, the services of supersubs Maisy Gibson from the Under 14s and Ben Stokes were called upon for the Cook Park 4 clash with Cessnock.
Skipper Daniel Jordan called correctly and invited the visitors to bat. Cessnock made a solid start before Tully Winsor (3/9) struck in the sixth over when Maisy held a skied ball.
Thomas Everett (1/22) picked up the second wicket in the fourteenth over with the score at 43. Cessnock then put together two good partnerships however good bowling from Kyle Bailey (1/14) and Jackson Cameron had each snaring valuable wickets.
Maisy Gibson (1/32) also chipped in with a fantastic catch off her own bowling and Cessnock were 5/139 at the second drinks break.
Tully Winsor was brought back for his second spell and helped clean up the lower order with the assistance of his opening partner Tom Bray (1/18) and some great fielding by Jackson Cameron with a pin-point throw to effect a run out. The Cessnock innings finished on 146 in the 40th over. Jackson finished with 1/9 from 8 overs at an outstanding dot ball rate of 85%. Braden Frohloff (78%), Tom Bray (77%), Tully Winsor (76%) and Jacob O’Hara (65%) also made outstanding contributions in this department.
Singleton made a good start against the new ball before Hugh Miles (9) was run out in the eighth over.
This brought Daniel Jordan (41) to the wicket where he and opener Braden Frohloff (68 not out) proceeded to take the game away from the visitors with an 88 run partnership.
Daniel’s enterprising innings included four fours and two sixes whilst Braden found the boundary rope five times in an outstanding display.
With a nice cameo by Ben Stokes (10 not out), Singleton passed the target in the 42nd over for the loss of only four wickets.
Braden was the worthy recipient of the “Match Ball” in what was his final appearance in Junior Representative Cricket.
As the Under 16s team has a bye in the last round following the withdrawal of Dungog in this age group, it was also the final game in Junior Representative colours for Hugh, Daniel, Kyle, Ben, Tom and Jacob as well as the conclusion for the surf seekers, Barton and Jake. Singleton Junior Cricket wishes these boys well for a future of enjoyment playing this great game.
Under 14s
Singleton v Cessnock, January 29.
The Singleton U/14s had their first win of the season against Cessnock in an entertaining game.
Cessnock won the toss and chose to bat.
Dan Bray claimed Singleton’s first wicket with the score on 7. From then on it was great line and length bowling from the entire bowling attack and pressure fielding that kept Cessnock’s batsmen worried.
Glenn Winsor and Will Holz each shared two wickets, with Isaac Andrews, Travis Batch and Laura Avard each taking one. Cody Sonter took an excellent catch as well.
Cessnock was bowled out for 96.
After lunch Singleton began their innings confidently and continued that way until overtaking Cessnock’s score in the 30th over.
Chris Duffie, 32, Nick Stokes, 24 and not out batsmen Will Holz, 176 and Glenn Winsor, 5 all batted solidly.
Thanks to Liam Dunn who filled in for the day and thanks to Glenn Winsor who once again stepped up from the U/12’s.
Singleton v Cessnock, Sunday, January 29.
Under 12s
Singleton v Cessnock
Cessnock won the toss and invited Singleton to bat on a very green wicket.
This proved to be the right decision when Singleton was 2 for 0 at the end of the first over.
Josh Shade and captain for the day, Pat McNab, settled down to the job at hand and added 15 to the score before Josh lost his wicket.
It was hard going for Singleton to add to their score thanks to an appalling long outfield an some very aggressive field settings from Cessnock.
A solid partnership developed between Nell Gibson and Bailey Schultz with some good running between the wickets.
Singleton finished their 25 overs, 6 for 45.
Cessnock opening bats deployed the cross bat slog to great advantage getting the ball over the top of Singleton fielders, and proved difficult to dismiss.
It wasn’t until the 17th over when Myles Egan pounced on the ball and swiftly returned it to the keeper who removed the bails.
This dismissal showed the run rate and in the 22nd over Josh Shade claimed 2 wickets, one bowled and the other stumped by keeper Nell Gibson.
In the very next over Bailey Schultz also claimed 2 wickets, one bowled and the other caught behind.
Cessnock finished their 25 overs 5 for 88.
After lunch Singleton returned to the crease but could only add 12 more runs for the loss of 4 wickets.
A big thank you to U/10 fill-ins, Jack Shade and Cody Rowe, who did a wonderful job and should be proud of themselves.
We look forward to seeing them in future Singleton rep teams.
