PLAYING squash at state level is not something many young sports people can say they have done.
Representing their school at state level is also not something easily achieved.
But for Luke and Zoe Collins and Brooke Almond, that is exactly how this year’s squash season has panned out.
Zoe has qualified for the Australian Junior Championships after placing fourth in the NSW State titles in the under 15s girls.
It is a very exciting period for the talented teenager who has had a fairly short squash career.
“I am really surprised as to how quickly everything has happened,” she said of her 18 months in the sport.
Currently ranked sixth in the state for her age group, Zoe’s success in the Combined High Schools is just as impressive.
All three represented at Hunter Region level as well as Ashley Deweerd.
Singleton had fantastic representation at the Sydney event that has seen Brooke, Luke and Zoe suit up and prepare for battle with the maroons in the NSW CHS team event in Dubbo next month.
Training for Brooke has been minimal this year, with school and theatre commitments, but she told The Argus she is expecting blues to do well against Queensland.
The trio of players are developing their game through both school and state competitions.
Luke, currently in his fourth year of the sport, is looking to improve on his performance and move up to Newcastle Supersquash.
For Zoe not only is a competition a chance to improve her game but it is a time where she can analyse the things she needs to work on.
Luke and Zoe have also competed in the National Squash titles in Adelaide with Luke finishing ninth in the under 17s boys and Zoe coming 13th in the under 15s girls.
Luke also placed fourth in the NSW State titles at Coffs Harbour and like his sister has qualified for the Australian Junior Championships.
Locally, Zoe has also impressed on court.
The 15-year-old played the game of the season against club member Bob Johnson who has played for 30-years.
The local competition has seen many juniors and senior players combining their experiences.
