Sports Star

ORGANISERS of this year’s Sports Star Awards have been disappointed with the response.

Nominations were to have closed today however secretary Jenny Knight has extended the nomination until 5pm Monday.

“We haven’t got any teams nominated and I know there are plenty of sporting teams that had great achievements last year,” Mrs Knight said.

There has also been a small response to the invitation to sporting bodies to honour volunteers within their ranks.

The sporting contribution award goes to people who have made significant contributions to their sport.

This could be through work on the grounds, contribution to committees and general involvement in the sport.

Each year the Singleton Sports Council presents up to five Service to Sport Awards to people who have served their Associaitions.

This award is highly regarded and usually recognises someone who has given ten years of service or more to their organisation.

Anyone wanting a nomination form for either the teams event or the service to sport award can call into The Singleton Argus, 6-8 Campbell Street, Singleton.

Nominations can be filled out on the spot and handed back to The Singleton Argus who can then pass the forms onto the committee or returned to Mrs Knight.

In terms of the teams and sporting awards, all finalists will be notified by mail early March.

The presentation evening is held at club Singleton on March 26, at 7.30pm.

This is a free evening and open to the general public.

It is a chance for the community to recognise the valuable sporting achievements people in their own community have accomplished during 2009.

Mrs Knight said as time has gone by, it has been interesting to note the number of athletes who have performed on the world stage.

She said it was a reflection of the vast opportunities available to sportsmen and women in Singleton and gave credit to the organisations who helped people pursue their sporting dreams.
