It seems that common sense has prevailed with Singleton Council’s decision to commence investigations into converting Hunter Street into a light traffic thoroughfare.
While heavy vehicle traffic needs to flow through the town, especially once the expansion to Gowrie Street Mall is completed, a narrow residential street that contains a primary school should not be one of the routes.
A large number of children either walk or ride to school and the potential for disaster will be there if an increased level of heavy traffic is permitted in the street.
Trucks take a lot longer than smaller vehicles to stop when braking, and with low visibility in the street with a large number of cars parked, it is not appropriate to be a route for heavy vehicles.
Although council has decided to commence investigations into installing a light traffic thoroughfare, it is not assured that it will happen.
In setting up a light traffic thoroughfare, there are certain State Government procedures that need to be followed.
However, a number of heavy hitters are now behind this cause, including the local state member, George Souris, the local traffic committee, and now Singleton Council.
