“We encourage first time and amateur shooters to come out here,” secretary Denis Pearce said.
“It’s a personal challenge it doesn’t matter how old you are.”
“Our oldest member is 81-years-old and the youngest is 16-years-old.”
Sport is an integral part of the Singleton community and it’s more than just the football codes that excel.
Just outside of Singleton at Warkworth, 1188 Golden Highway is the Clay Target shooter’s $750,000 state-of-the -art facility which is seen as one of the best clubs in regional Australia.
One of the more unique features of the club is their Olympic style ball trap which allows the throwing of targets up to 75 metres out at 90 miles per hour (mph).
It was installed last year thanks to member Oliver Lighezzolo and his desire to help juniors who have dreams of representing Australia at the Commonwealth and Olympic games.
The club has a Field and Game shoot style which sees targets fly out in a manner that imitates bird and animal movements, two Down the Line traps that shoot targets out to 46 metres at around 50mph.
Their equipment is used on their Wednesday practice days from 10am to 2pm and during competitions days hosted on the second Saturday of every month.
These competitive events bring in people from all over the Hunter and beyond to compete.
What makes the club stand out aside from its great facilities, is their family friendly atmosphere helped by a playground and welcoming club house.
Other features include the clay target traps which are solar powered and concrete paths that allow for disabled access to all the shooting positions.
“We’re hoping to get more juniors at the club along with more women,” Mr Pearce said.
Coal and Allied let the club shoot on the 15 acre area property nearby the Warkworth mine and the facilities were built with government and Singleton Sport Council grants.
The club house structure was the original Lancaster’s shed and donated to the club for free.
The next step in improving the club is the creation of a new awning to avoid the heavy sun on one side of the building.
