It was a tight tussle and the result came down to the last game of the third match. Team eight Brad Nelson, Grant Farrar, Bob Johnstone were the winners over Team two Mick Collins, John Richardson, Marg Richardson.
First match was line two consisting of Grant Farrar and John Richardson.
Due to the very hot night, the ball was bouncing well which provided for a hectic pace of the games.
John started well and raced to an early lead in the first game until Grant fought back to finally win the first game.
Grant again prevailed in the second game but John found some more energy to win the third game.
After a titanic tussle, Grant won the match in the fourth game to give his team the lead. This match took nearly one hour and left both players feeling exhausted.
Line one duo of Brad Nelson and Mick Collins were next to play.
Both players hit the ball extremely hard and have excellent court cover and balls recovery skills which provided for long rallies.
The small crowd of onlookers was treated to some high quality squash. Mick finally prevailed to take the first game.
The pace of the second and third games did not slacken and it was hand out after hand out. Mick with many remarkable recovery shots finally triumphed to win the match in three games.
It was then down to the third match of Bob Johnstone and Marg Richardson which was a tight struggle from the start with both payers keen to win. After a see -saw struggle in the first game Bob finally prevailed.
Bob also won the second, then Marg down eight points to three in third game fought back to win 10/8.
The Grand Final result came down to the fourth game with both players giving their all. Bob finally won the fourth game to give team eight the Grand Final victory.
Team eight was also the minor premiers in the main competition.
Line winners for the main competition were Line 1 Ben Isaac, Line 2 Neil Nelson, Line 3 Bob Johnstone.
This award is given for the most consistent performance over all games through the competition.
The 2013 Spring Competition has been difficult with shift work and other work related situations resulting in absences.
A couple of players also received injuries, unrelated to squash, which hindered them. Those players that were able to turn up regularly were in the final four teams that fought out the semi-finals.
A friendly and congenial atmosphere is evident on game nights and more people are needed to take advantage of opportunities that the game of squash offers.
Singleton Squash Club resumes with grading on Monday night at 7pm February 4 2014 at the Heights Sports Centre. Current players, “old” members and new players are encouraged to attend the two grading nights so that teams can be formed for the Autumn competition.
