Club shares its profits to thank volunteers

SINGLETON not-for-profit groups were on the receiving end of Singleton Diggers Community Chest generosity on Friday night.

Twenty groups from throughout the district shared in $60,000 in funding from the club’s community development support fund.

Singleton Town Band received the bonus after it also received the people’s choice prize.

Member for Upper Hunter George Souris paid tribute to the role of volunteers in the community and said some people contribute to a whole range of community, social and sporting clubs.

Clubs NSW president Peter Newell spoke of the role of clubs in the community, with $3.2 billion a year going to the NSW economy and $7billion nationally.

Speaking on a local level, King Street Public School principal Cath Larkman, spoke of the club’s contribution to cracker night, a night that would not go ahead without Singleton Diggers’ support.

Mrs Larkman said she soon discovered the event’s wider community support and the intense effort contributed to the event by the school P & C, staff and students.

Last year the event funded 10 new desktop computers and contributed to purchasing new interactive whiteboards for younger classes.

But it is the community spirit that the event generates and one that is replicated at the annual Community Chest.

Recipients of Community Chest donations on Friday night were: Singleton Girl Guides, Singleton Police Community Youth Club, Life Education, Singleton Men’s Shed, Rotary Foundation, Uniting Care Singleton Disability Respite Services, Youth off the Streets, Cooinda Hostel, Camp Quality, Singleton Senior Citizens Association, Elizabeth Gates Village Auxiliaries, Polio Eradication, Singleton Hospital Auxiliaries, Mercy Nursing Home, Shelter Box, St Vincent De Paul, Singleton Legacy, Murrane Housing Incorporated, Darlington Rural Fire Brigade, RSL Sub Branch.

The contribution by Singleton Diggers by the club so far this year has totalled in excess of $100,000 and includes the sponsorship of two soldiers to visit Gallipoli and the King Street Public School cracker night.
