Motocross - what a month

SINGLETON’S Joel Wightman has wrapped up a stellar month of racing with his third major victory from two events.

The month of July began with the third and final round of the NSW State Motocross Championships at the Goanna Tracks complex in Coonabarabran.

Carrying the momentum of a double-class win at the previous round of the series, the Yamaha Junior Racing Team rider entered the event full of confidence and eager to finish the series on a high.

Competing in two classes, the 15 year 150cc on Friday and the 15years 250cc on Saturday, Joel began on a positive note.

Joel posting a second and two wins, including a thrilling, come-from behind effort in the final race, to take the overall for the round and seal a solid second in the series.

The second and final day of competition saw Joel aboard his 250cc machin to give his most dominant performance of the series.

Three commanding victories from three races was enough for Joel to not only wrap up the overall for the day, but also the State Championship in that class.

Still on a high following his performance at the NSW State titles, the past weekend saw Joel travel to Shepparton, Victoria to compete in the final round of their State Championship.

With the Australian Junior Motocross Championships only nine weeks away, this gave him the opportunity to not only build on his current form but also get a gauge of some of the competition he will be up against.

Once again racing both the 150cc and 250cc classes, the weekend did not begin as well as expected with a disappointing first race holding Joel to fourth on the 150.

Using this as motivation for Sunday, Joel returned to take a closely fought victory in the 250cc class, his third major victory in the span of three weeks.

Joel now turns his attention to the Australian Junior Motocross Championships, to be held at Coolum Queensland in late September.
