The Singleton Roosters played their first home game of the season last week welcoming the Nelson Bay Marlins to the chook pen. A good crowd was in attendance to see a very even and hard fought first quarter which saw the scores even at the first break.
The Roosters fell away in the second quarter allowing the Marlin players to run free around the ground. The Roosters received an 1980’s style spay from the coaches at half time and seemed to react well to this, out scoring Nelson Bay in the third quarter to be back in match at three quarter time.
The last quarter saw the Roosters outscored to go down in a hard fought match. The Roosters will need to play four quarters of football if they are to pressure clubs higher up the ladder and be competitive during the season.
Players player was awarded to Jarryd Ingram. Other players to play well were Kris Thompson in his first game of the year, Luke Davis, Beau Maynard and Alex Mitchell. The Roosters will welcome back a number of key players for next weeks game against Cardiff.

Second Division – Singleton Vs Newcastle City
Although there were a few outs, the Roosters’ 2nd Division had a good team on paper against what would be a tough opponent in Newcastle City. From the first bounce the visiting team showed their class, their skills and stoppage plays lifting them against Singletons’ dogged defense to a four goal to nothing lead at the break.
The Singleton backline continued to work hard into the second quarter, also initiating some run and linkage through Sam Howard on the wings to provide some scoring opportunities for Jason Kolatchew, who kicked the first of his three for the day. The Newcastle City boys were still applying hard pressure however and at half time the margin was 58 points.
Tom Catlin in his return to the Pen built on a solid first half to increase his presence around the field into the second and battled all day, as did Dylan Bennett, who supplied plenty of run and inside 50 entries. A tight third quarter tussle was let slip right at the end with a couple of quick City goals but the Roosters tightened in the fourth and were only outscored by a goal, leaving plenty of positives and showing some heart that we can to build on and take into the next game.
