Both sides fielded 15 players, which is testimony to the strength of the game in the Newcastle and Hunter regions. With the ground much improved from Round 1, the contest promised to be free-flowing and the mighty junior Roosters delivered on all fronts.
Connor Dicks was first to put the scorer’s to work with a set shot that hit the post, quickly followed by majors from another set shot and a classy snap from the pocket. A tsunami of scoring followed, with the team going on to kick 11 goals.
From the early stages it was clear that every player had brought their A-game and quickly overwhelmed their opponents with great defensive pressure and sharp hand and foot skills.
Recently arrived from Victoria, newcomer Dylan Lowry won Best on Ground honours, making an impact right across the park. Dylan took several strong marks and kicked multiple goals, while also hitting his team mates with quality disposals by foot. Dylan has the all the attributes of a footballer and shows enormous promise.
Last week’s ball magnets Seth Kolatchew and Dorian Thornberry got plenty of touches again, while Steven Dedini also racked up possessions and took several critical marks in defence.
Connor Avery and Jordie Brown showed great commitment, with both players getting plenty of touches and applying a number of strong tackles. Both boys were playing only their second game of footy and clearly have bright futures in the game.
Captain Grant Hamilton led from the front and provided plenty of run and showed he is keen to win the contested ball. Alfie Nester showed plenty of courage by getting in-and-under and tying up the ball in several contests. Nathan Duff had a stellar quarter in the forwards, winning plenty of ball and keeping the goal umpires busy.
All the boys showed great focus and commitment in what are promising signs for the rest of the season. Their hard work at training is paying off, with much improved skills and understanding of the game. They play the game in great spirits and are really coming together as a team. Fantastic effort Roosters!
Under 11s
After last week’s tight win, the boys wanted to continue their winning form against Port Stephens Power.
The match looked to be a low scoring one with the opposition only getting two points in the first term. The Roosters were scoreless but had the strong breeze in the next quarter.
Cameron Saunders took advantage of the wind scoring his first of two goals to get Singleton in front. He was assisted well by the hard work of Connor Thornberry and Darcy Saunders in the middle.
Ben Horridge was determined to strengthen the lead after half time when he snuck a goal in at what was the non-scoring end. Wynston Wegner was terrier-like going after the ball and putting his head over it to gain possession.
The Roosters ran out for the last quarter with a slender 14-9 point lead and the wind behind their backs. Aiden Bagnall defended well down back getting the ball and carrying out of the danger zone. Captain Daltyn McCartney made sure they would be two wins fromtwo games by making it very hard to get past him and almost scoring a huge goal from half way which unluckily hit the post. A big thanks to Steven, Connor, Dylan and Seth for playing up from the under 9s. Final score Singleton 4-4-28 to Port Stephens 2-3-15.
Under 13s
Port Stephens started out strongly in the opening period scoring 5.2.32 while keeping Singleton scoreless. The Roosters kept their chins up and fought back in the second, keeping Port Stephens in check with both sides kicking 2.1.13.Singleton scored a further 8 points in the third quarter while Port Stephens scored 38 points. Singleton fought on gallantly however Port Stephens proved too good on the day and scored a further 31 points while Singleton were unable to add to their score in the final term.
Final scores were Ports Stephens defeated Singleton, 18.6.114, to Singleton 3.3.21.
Goal Scorers Ethan Kolatchew, Travis Whalan and Darcy Saunders, who were supported by strong efforts from the rest of the playing group. Some good examples of ball handling skills and shepherding were displayed. Thanks again to the Under 11s for playing up and making a stronger team - Luke, Darcy, Cameron, Dominic, Ben Nick and Dalton. Special Thanks to Kevin and Andrew for coaching on the day.
Under 15s
The pre-match talk was about the evenness of the two teams. The Under 15s saw this as an opportunity for the players to post their first win of the season.
Kicking into a strong breeze in the first quarter, there were examples of great team play that resulted in the opening three goals. However, the inability to work hard to help out in defence lead to the Sharks scoring three goals on fast breaks.
The second quarter was a rather scrappy affair with many shots on goal but only a few between the tall posts. Jackson Kolatchew, Tyler Blackaby, Dale Cox and Brandan Frazer were providing strong leadership all around the ground.
The second half began with a refocussed effort to display better teamwork and a run-on style of footy. With the untimely injury of the opposition’s key player, the contest became more one sided. What was pleasing is that the effort of the players never wavered and 16 goals in the second half reflected the dominance of the Roosters.
Thanks to the three Under 13 players, Travis Whalan, Ethan Kolatchew and Tristin Pitcher for playing up and Matthew Cooke for a tremendous first game. The Roosters are still looking for any 14 to 15 year old boys to join and develop their skills in a great environment.
