The intersection has been the site of 26 accidents including one fatal accident this year despite continuing work by the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) to improve its safety.
The upgrade work with an estimated value for strategic planning of $30-$50million would include duel merging lanes in both directions.
In the council’s submission which was considered at last night’s meeting the project is described as urgent due to the imminent danger as supported by the statistic.
HIF was established in 2011 to enhance the Hunter’s infrastructure including transport, education, water and health infrastructure to support economic growth.
The Government allocated $350m to the fund over four years.
Council’s second submission also involves the same section of road with a call for the duplication of the New England Highway from Belford to Singleton. Planning for this work is estimated to cost $20-$40m.
The third submission involves funding for planning to upgrade intersection with the Golden Highway at Broke Road, Mitchell Line Road and Putty Road. Safety treatments for Pagan Street Jerrys Plains and a safety underpass at Gees Crossing on the Golden Highway area also included.
