However both clubs would love to see more members join and participate in fun, friendship and fellowship.
Probus is an organisation that provides opportunities for retired and semi-retired people to meet in friendly and relaxed circumstances to enjoy each other’s company, said Probus Men’s Club president John Flannery.
“The foundation on which Probus is built is fun, friendship and fellowship,” he said.
“We meet regularly - we make new friends and often renew old friendships as we move from full-time work to retirement. Sometimes people when they retire find themselves at the loose end and Probus can help to alleviate that feeling.”
Men’s Probus has 105 members and was established 30 years ago while the Ladies Probus Club was founded in 1999 and has 143 members.
Probus started in the United Kingdom in 1965 and is sponsored by the Rotary organisation.
Whereas service clubs like Rotary, Lions and Apex are active in the community doing good deeds and performing fund raising activities Probus does not involve similar activities.
“Many members of local service clubs join Probus when they want to wind down and just belong to an organisation purely for companionship, “ said Mr Flannery.
Singleton Probus Ladies Club president, Jenny Tindale agreed saying her organisation was all about meeting people, enjoying time together and arranging interesting trips.
“This year we have organised a week long trip to Eden on the South Coast,” she said.
Like the men’s club the ladies have interesting speakers at their monthly meetings which are held on the third Thursday morning at 10:00am at Singleton Diggers Club.
The men meet at the same time and at the same venue on the first Thursday of the month.
Another feature of the men’s club is their regional Probus bowls days where they compete with other Probus clubs.
“Plus we have a number of former members in local nursing homes and each month we take them out for lunch at the Diggers Club – this is called our ‘Crib Club’,” said Mr Flannery.
Both clubs are on the lookout for new members and would welcome enquires. For more information please contact either Jenny Tindale 65731734 or John Flannery 65731252.
