The announcement on Wednesday that the Land and Environment Court has approved the Ashton South East Open Cut may be welcomed by many but for those residents of Camberwell village who have been fighting the project it was a bitter pill to swallow.

Like residents in many of our district’s villages they feel coal mining is being promoted at the expense of their small but once cohesive communities.
In her judgement on Ashton Nicola Pain commented on how the mine would have adverse impacts on the Camberwell village in particularly its social cohesion due to the loss of long term residents.
This impact has already been felt not only in Camberwell, but also in Bulga and Jerrys Plains.
Warkworth and Ravensworth are now deserted.
