Always entertaining, the wacky event draws crowds to watch the couples tackle the obstacle-laden 250m course.
The duo who completes the course in the fastest time not only wins the coveted title but also a $4000 travel package to contest the World Wife Carrying Championships in Finland.
Event organiser Greg Clydsdale said this year the entry fee of $50 per couple had been waived to encourage more entries.
“Entry is free in 2014 but we still have a limit of 20 couples so first in best dressed,” he said.
“Why not have go, it’s a fun and you can win a fantastic prize.
“If you win and don’t want the prize it can be forfeited.”
“I have had enquiries from all over the country, even Tasmania.”
He explained the race was pretty relaxed with only a few rules and regulations.
“Competitors get a 10-second time penalty if they drop their partners and the person being carried must weigh 49kg. If they weigh less their partner has to have extra weight attached to them. Just like on the race track,” Mr Clysdale said.
“You don’t even have to be a married couple to enter.”
Last year’s champions Amie and Jamie Graham from MacMasters Beach on the Central Coast have recently returned from Finland after placing 12th in the World Wife Carrying Championships.
Amie says it was an awesome trip and they managed to tag on a European holiday at the end.
“It was amazing, they were so welcoming but they take the event quite seriously,” she says.
“Jamie and I just keep looking at each and smiling, it was hilarious.”
It's all just a bit of fun really, Amie says, and with such a great prize on offer she encourages others to give it a go.
Singleton Show president Max Wake is proud the local Singleton community has embraced the Wife Carrying Titles.
“The crowd absolutely loves the excitement of it [wife carrying],” he said.
“There are always a few spills through the water obstacle and it can be hilarious to watch.”
