After months of speculation, the Redbank Power Station closed its doors, putting 39 people out of work.
Of course, this comes after the Planning Assessment Commission’s (PAC) decision to knock back the Drayton South Project, which involves about 500 employees.
But, while the Drayton ruling created national headlines in the media, the Redbank outcome barely made a ripple.
Unfortunately, the result will have just as big an effect on Singleton – and the business sector – as the mining job losses.
Whereas most of the Drayton South workforce reside out of the Local Government Area (LGA), nearly all of the Redbank staff live in town and have done so for many, many years.
It was distressing to hear some of the employees speak last Friday; for them, the power station represented “family”, not “career”.
And, that, should be taken into context when comparing the situation to Drayton.
