During the week, the company welcomed 17 new first year apprentices, including locals Jacob Linton, Matt Leach, Brendon Hamilton, Keaton Tull, Nelson Gardiner, Mitchell Shade, Isaac Thompson and Dylan King.
The total number of apprentices working at Liddell and Bayswater power stations is now 65, making AGL Macquarie the largest employer of trainees in the Upper Hunter.
The 2015 first year apprentices have been appointed across the electrical, mechanical and metal fabrication trades and, during their training, will work at both Liddell and Bayswater power stations.
Mr Thomas, who also started his career as an AGL apprentice 27 years ago, said attracting young people to the business was critical for the industry’s future.
“We’re proud to continue the tradition of training young people in the Hunter region and I welcome our new apprentices to AGL,” he said.
“Electricity is the foundation of our modern lives, but it’s also a challenging and changing industry.
“We need the next generation of young people to work with us as we move into the future.
“AGL is a great company to work for and offers young people with initiative and drive the opportunity to develop successful and rewarding careers.”
Meeting together for the first time at Liddell power station on Tuesday, the new apprentices will start their careers in the electricity industry with a two-day induction and orientation program.
The induction program introduces the apprentices to AGL Macquarie, the electricity industry and to the importance of health and safety in the workplace.
They will meet a range of senior managers, employees and current apprentices from across AGL Macquarie, and learn about everything from payroll systems to safe and responsible driving.
