Thanks to a FundAbility grant, the library can now offer all school age children the chance to meet, build and ultimately have fun, once a month at their new Lego Club.
Readers advisory officer Natalie Dimmock says running the program is something they have wanted to do for a while to cater for older children.
“We have lots of programs geared towards the younger ones, like our storytime sessions, but we tend to lose them as they get older,” she says.
“The club will take place once a month but for two different age groups.
“Children aged five to seven are asked to attend on the fourth Wednesday of each month between 3.30pm and 4.30pm.
“Those aged eight to 15 will come every second Wednesday at the same time.”
Natalie says each session will have a theme as a “jumping off point”.
However, how they interpret the theme is left up to each child’s imagination.
“I will be displaying books during the session relating to the theme for inspiration or just to take home and read,” she says.
“At the end of the one hour session, they will have clean up and then they will be offered the opportunity to display their work.”
An aspect of the program that helps to build confidence, Natalie explains.
The money to buy the lego came from the FundAbility grant program, a two-year disability inclusion initiative run by Northcott and funded by the Department of Family and Community Services.
Its purpose is to encourage community groups to run inclusive programs for young people.
“Everyone deserves to be part of their community and having a disability should be no barrier,” Northcott chief executive officer Kerry Stubb says.
“Unfortunately, we know that in some communities it still is a barrier and that’s why programs like FundAbility are critical in helping communities become more inclusive places for people of all abilities.”
