Scammers are at it again, sending fake speeding fines to consumers across the state, the ACT, Victoria and Queensland, as well as several overseas countries, claiming to be from the NSW Office of State Revenue (OSR).
But, Tony Newbury is telling locals to flick the fake fines.
“Don’t respond to scammers,” he said.
“Give them the flick.
“This scam is designed to trick people into paying money or giving out personal and banking information such as bank account numbers, passwords and credit card numbers.
“Don’t do it, don’t respond or they could steal your money.
“Protect your identity and spread the warning to family and friends, neighbours and the vulnerable, so others don’t fall for this scam.
“The NSW Office of State Revenue does not issue fines by email.
“They are either issued on the spot or by post.
“If you think you have a fine, check its validity at www.sdro.nsw.gov.au by entering the penalty or infringement number and offence date.
“You can also call OSR on 1300 138 118.”
The Singleton Argus editor Rod Thompson was one person who received the fake fine.
He admitted, at the time, he was shocked – and sceptical – about the infringement.
“My first thought was ‘oh no, not again’,” he said.
“However, it’s the first time I’ve got one via email, so that made me a bit wary.
“It was from the NSW Office of State Revenue and looked genuine.
“It also stated the offence was detected by an approved speed measuring device and recorded by an approved camera recording device.
“And, I knew I’d seen a few of those by the side of the road in recent weeks.
“But, when you looked closer at the email, there were too many errors.
“It had enforcement orde (missing the “r”) number, and when you clicked on it, the URL link failed to register.
“I then rang the NSW Office of State Revenue and they, thankfully, had nothing on record.
“I must say it was a big relief.”
