That’s the opinion of Jacky McDonald, who was recently appointed national director of school croquet by the Australian Croquet Association.
“I’m looking forward to the role,” she said.
“I’ve got a lot out of croquet over the years – I would like to put something back in.
“We don’t have many kids in the sport, so I’m hoping to encourage more to join.
“In fact, a number of Branxton school students will start here [at the club] next term.
“As a PE specialist, I’ve always had a lot to do with young people and sport.
“I’ve been involved with school croquet for the past decade and have coordinated a state championship for eight years, featuring both primary and secondary pupils.
“In 2015, I intend to run an Australian Schools Championship for secondary students – and have been in touch with each state.”
The Branxton Croquet Club president admits she is “very passionate” about the sport.
“Unfortunately, it’s seen as an activity for old people,” Jacky said.
“But, anyone can play from the age of nine to 90 – all you need is flat shoes, a hat and a mallet.
“It’s non-contact, tactical, enjoyable and affordable.
“Not every kid wants to take up footy or netball, so it’s a perfect alternative.
“On top of that, the people are nice and friendly.”
Jacky first picked up a mallet 19 years ago and has spent the past 10 with the Branxton organisation.
“My husband Geof tried to talk me into golf,” she said.
“However, it didn’t interest me that much and I wanted to meet different people.
“Ironically, Geof took up croquet two years later.”
Jacky said the Branxton club, which hosts 35 members, has a few events in the pipeline.
“May 2 is World Croquet Day,” she said.
“At Branxton, we’ll be conducting a Come and Try Day.
“As well as our usual playing days on Tuesdays and Saturdays, we are now playing on Thursdays too; but check with secretary Helen (4930 6154) first.
“Coaching is also scheduled on the first Thursday of the month, starting at 9am.
“In March, some of our members attended a coaching weekend at Maitland.
“It was an intensive day of training while a morning was set aside for all players to learn more on the tactics and mindset of the game.”
