EIGHT Singleton High students are in Sydney today aiming for personal best times and distances at the Combined High Schools state athletics carnival.
Nick Hough, Jacob Spinks, Lochie Gallegos and Cooper Harris finished in second place in the 4 by 100m relay at the Hunter regional carnival at Glendale. Wallsend High pipped the boys at the post but only by the tiniest of margins. Running the distance in 47 seconds flat, the boys have been training two and three days a week since in an attempt to snip two seconds off this time at state competition.
“We are going for gold,” Jacob said.
Meanwhile Aaron Brennan, competing in the 17 years shotput, set himself a 15 metre goal at regionals and surpassed that distance by .25m. He too finished in second place and was looking for a similar distance at state.
Bradley brothers, Mitchell and James, are long distance runners. Mitchell will compete in the 15 years 1500m event and has challenged himself to knock 40 seconds off his best time. Younger brother James will compete in the 14 years 1500m event and the 13 years 800m event. He won the 800m event at regionals and admits he prefers this event because it is faster.
Daniel York will compete in the discus in the under 13s age division and is going into the state event with the confidence of achieving first place at regional. He achieved a distance of 32.8m and is also hoping to do better at state.
The competition is at Homebush over three days.
