THE Australian War Memorial’s Last Post Ceremony on Wednesday will feature the biography of Private Alister Roy Lester, a Singleton lad who lost his life in World War II.

And, to mark the moment, Singleton Public Library will live video stream the event for the community at 4.55pm.
Private Lester, who was killed in France in April 1918, was the son of Alice Lester.
He was a nephew of Augustus Adolphus Lester and Frederick Lester who also served.
Sadly, Augustus lost his life in France four months after Alister.
By a strange quirk of fate, the biography will be given by Warrant Officer Jack Braban OAM, son in law of Robert and Lyn MacBain, who have close ties to the family.
It is hoped that members of the family will be able to attend and view this commemoration of Alister’s life.
“At the end of each day, starting at 4.55pm AEST, the memorial farewells visitors with its moving Last Post Ceremony,” Mrs MacBain said.
“The ceremony begins with the singing of the Australian National Anthem, followed by the poignant strains of a Lament, played by a piper.
“Visitors are invited to lay wreaths and floral tributes beside the Pool of Reflection.
“The Roll of Honour in the Cloisters lists the names of more than 102,000 Australians who have given their lives in war and other operations over more than a century.
“At each ceremony the story behind one of these names will be told.
“The Ode is then recited, and the ceremony ends with the sounding of the Last Post.”
