At about 5.30pm Police were called to the house and spoke with a neighbour who confirmed the residents were not there.
When Singleton firefighters arrived at the scene the kitchen was well alight.
They immediately worked to extinguish the blaze and managed to contain it.
However, it did cause extensive damage to the kitchen area at the back of the house.
With firefighters confirming they had to remove gyprock from the roof to cool the area.
A couch on an adjoining veranda also caught alight.
Shortly after the fire started the occupants of the home were contacted and told Police they had been cooking before leaving the premises but had turned the stove element off.
Local fire fighters were in attendance for approximately 90 minutes and received assistance from a Branxton unit.
Paramedics were required at the scene as breathing apparatus were used by fire fighters.
Police believe there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding this fire.
