Addressing the Singleton Business Chamber’s monthly meeting on Tuesday, the deputy principal of Singleton High School (SHS) had nothing but praise for the Singleton Community Learning Cluster Trade Training Centre and SHS delivery models.
The initiative, established in 2009, encompasses St Catherine’s Catholic College in partnership with Singleton High School, Australian Christian College and TAFE.
“It’s a great relationship between the four schools – and it’s unique in Australia,” she said.
“The pupils get all the major training benefits at home, whether it be in primary industries, electro technology, construction, metals and engineering, hospitality, sport coaching, IT, retail, business services or automotive.
“There are so many opportunities and so many pathways.
“It’s important to prepare the students – and we do that via a wide variety of subject choices, as well as Year 10 work experience, Year 11/12 Vet (Vocational Education and Training) work placement, TAFE Cert 11 work placement, traineeships and apprenticeships.
“What school used to be is totally different to what it is today.”
Mrs Holloway said numerous employees recognised the pupils’ skills and commitment, thanks to the trade training centre and VET courses delivered at the high schools.
“For example, the hospitality students do a lot of functions and events off site, as well as after hours,” she said.
“On top of that, they’re completing their Higher School Certificates.
“That’s dedication.
“So, the pupils are using the courses to benefit themselves.
“And, overall, we’ve got a fairly high success rate.”
