But it won’t involve any fighting, just door knocking and setting up stalls around town.
In the hope of selling as many badges as possible on Friday, September 4, during the organisations iconic fundraising week.
Legacy is a charity providing services to Australian families suffering financially, and socially, after the incapacitation or death of a spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service.
They currently care for about 90,000 widows and 1900 children and disabled dependants throughout Australia.
Here in Singleton, Arthur says they assist approximately 70 widows, providing anything from companionship to counselling and house repairs.
“If we are willing to send troops into battle, we should be willing to support the families they leave behind,” he says.
He says students from both Singleton High School (SHS) and St Catherine’s Catholic College are always willing to help out, pounding the pavements for the worthwhile cause.
“Soldiers from the Singleton School of Infantry will man stalls at Bunnings, ALDI, Hungry Jacks and McDonald’s,” Arthur adds.
“And there will also be other stalls at local shopping centres and on the main street.
“In Singleton, Legacy is indeed grateful for the ongoing support from the local community, the mining companies and businesses that have always opened their hearts and wallets during badge week.
“St Catherine’s, Singleton High School, the School of Infantry, the RSL Sub-Branch, Legacy Widows Club and the dedicated legatees have always been the backbone of our success.”
He says last year they collected more than enough money to cover all the expenses the group incur over a 12-month period.
SHS student Piper Francis, who also happens to be Mr Francis’ niece, knows how important Legacy’s work is.
“They help war widows; the legates go around to their house and check up on them,” she explains.
“Some of them are actually veterans themselves.”
Arthur adds at one stage an ex-serviceman could join Legacy but this has changed in recent years.
