Finland, here come the wife carrying champs

ELLIE Gresham and Beau Mynard did not hestitate when asked if they would travel to Finland to represent Australia at the World Wife Carrying Titles next year.

“Yes, yes,” they both said.

The pair actually finished in second place in the event run as part of Saturday afternoon’s Singleton Show program.

First place went to Canadian lumberjack Sterling Hart who carried showgirl contestant Emily McAlpin.  They knew they would be ineligible for the prize because of Sterling’s Canadian ancestry but wanted to give the competition a shot.

Ellie and Beau finished the course in  one minute and ten seconds and they know they will have to knock significant seconds off that time to be competitive in Finland.

Given they had no practice and had not competed before there is every chance they will improve their time.

“We got talked into going in the event last night and entered after the rodeo,” Ellie said adding that a conversation with last year’s winner, Emma Blenman, convinced them to enter.

“I asked Beau if he could pick me up and when he could we thought, let’s do it,” Ellie said.

Ten couples from throughout New South Wales entered the event.
