One of the organisers of the ride is Ken Dreaper who is quietly chuffed with the ride’s success, particularly with lots of cyclists coming from outside the region.
“It is a chance for people to ride on quiet, country roads without all the traffic that our city counterparts experience and I think for that reason, people make the trip to Singleton to take part, it is a ride that offers something a little special and different,” Mr Dreaper said.
The ride follows the mail run route Mr Dreaper’s father carried out six days a week in his Holden car from 1958 to 1967.
“As a young boy, I would wake early on Saturday mornings and during the school holidays so that I could accompany him,” Mr Dreaper said.
The ride is in memory of Mr Dreaper’s parents and particularly, is an acknowledgement of a mailrun that connected the country community for so many years.
The ride takes place on Sunday April 10, leaving from Singleton Civic Centre with staggered starting times in accordance with distances to allow for a more fluent start for all involved.
The 100km course riders will start their ride between 7am and 7:30am, 65km riders from 7:30, 40km riders from 8am and 20km riders from 8:30am.
Food, water and toilet stops will be provided at two points along the course.
All entrants will receive a free lunch and drink at the finish area and free entry into the pool at the YMCA Gym & Swim adjacent to the finish site for a refreshing shower and/or swim after the ride.
All the money raised from entry fees and sponsorship will go to Singleton Family Support Service. Major sponsors of the event are Theiss and Quarry Mining. There is also a great raffle being run this year with prizes including a bike and helmet supplied by Momentum Cycles in Singleton, a balloon flight for two from Balloon Aloft and 18 holes of golf for two people at Hunter Valley Golf at Pokolbin.
The workers from Singleton Family Support will be providing children's activities during the ride, so bring the family along for a great morning of entertainment. Activities include a jumping castle, arts and crafts and balloon fun. This will also be an opportunity to see how the fundraising from this event will support the Singleton community.
