And, this includes a winning relay team, a number of medalists and plenty of finalists.
The Little Athletics NSW Region 2 Track and Field Championships at the Hunter Sports Centre in Glendale over the weekend proved a happy hunting ground for twenty-six local competitors.
However, a win in the junior boy’s relay event, and Ethan McLouglin’s gold medal haul were the highlights.
McLouglin, who was also a member of the triumphant U12 relay team, came first in four individual events.
The talented 12-year-old won the 100m, 200m, and 400m sprints as well as the long jump.
In the 200 metre sprint he broke the record in the first heat, and again in the final.
Championship officer, Dorothy Smuts, says she expects to have more to report when he heads to the State Championships in March at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre.
McLouglin says he is not nervous about competing at this level.
“I have made it to state three times with the club and through the school,” says the St Cath’s student.
“Sprinting is my favourite event, and it keeps me fit for rugby union.”
In Sydney McLouglin will join fellow speedsters, Brandon Cox, Dominic Roar, and Lochlan Young to contest the boys’ under-12 relay event.
Much to their surprise they managed to beat a quality field at the regionals, and recorded a new personal best of 59.38.
Cox says they did not expect to win.
“We will probably start working on our baton changes now,” he says with a grin.
Cox also won two bronze medals in the Under 9 200m and 400m sprint events.
