But, the scoreline did not reflect the true nature of the game.
The Bulls dominated play at stages, however Merewether proved too powerful.
Singleton played much stronger in the second half and will be looking to take that momentum into this weekend against Nelson Bay, which is a very achievable victory for the Bulls.
With all three grades up for grabs, Singleton is a good chance to come away with the chocolates.
The Bulls’ First XV went down against premiership contenders Merewether Carlton 50-10.
The home side’s two tries come from Singleton Army Lions prop Michael Linebald, who backed up after steering the Lions to a victory.
This newly-formed link with the Army has really strengthened the two clubs’ relationship and has provided great benefits to both organisations, which is great to see.
The first try came from a pick and go after heavy pressure from the Bulls, with the second arising from either a tactical mismatch or a prop sea gulling on the hook and sling (wing).
Both Brennan boys again had a great game, Liam Bowden was busy and Ethan Adler was solid at the back.
Second grade was a much tighter contest with Carlton prevailing 35-19 – a tight win against an impressive Bulls team.
Singleton started strongly, with great pressure and possession swinging to the Bulls.
This saw the opposition become frustrated quickly and, as a result of repeated infringements, two of the green guys received a 10-minute time out in the “naughty corner”.
Singleton was quick to make use of the extra men, with great forward penetration and slick hands through the entire blackline for Kadin Howard to score in the corner.
This try was converted from the sideline by Alex Dunn.
Merewether responded immediately and scored a couple of tries before Brady Hay bagged his own “meat pie” after a short burst to go in under the sticks.
The final try for the Bulls was scored by Howard out wide.
Jackson Andrews and Guy O’Loughlin were outstanding in the pack and Charles Shaddock played out of his hair once again.
Third grade saw Singleton defeated by Carlton 19-0.
This was a great result and a really good defensive effort to keep such a good team to a low scoreline.
Big Adam Clements had a terrific game with several damaging runs.
Ethan Deaves was outstanding in his second match of rugby union and played well above his weight.
This weekend pits the Bulls against the Nelson Bay Gropers at the Groperdome.
This will be tight in all three grades and Singleton could use all hands on deck to try and get some points on the competition board.
Coach Bob has been forced to make a few minor changes, however the replacements are certainly up to the task.
The team will be pumped up for this one.
Third grade kicks off 12.20pm, the “seconds” at 1.45pm and First XV starts at 3pm.
