Breezy but near perfect weather conditions added to the success of the Betts Bower Haulage Group Singleton Open Weekend of golf. Two near capacity fields competed to find the best Ambrose Pairs team and individual player. Saturday’s event was a Medley Ambrose Pairs and the last year’s winners were again favourites – they didn’t disappoint. Brayden Petersen and Ben Stokes fired easily the day’s best scratch score of 8 under par 61 to take out the scratch. The A grade (0 to 6.5 hcp) nett winners were Andy Campbell and Liam Storey who returned a score of 60.5. Liam’s dazzling bombs from the tee may have been a major contributing factor to the win. Last year’s winners Mick Williams and Wayne Rutter fired a nett score of 61.25 to take the runner’s up prize. In B grade (6.75 to 9) Phil Bugotu and Ken Millar were the popular winners. Firing a solid 63 nett they took out first place from the mixed pairing of Debbie Cooper and Ian “the Bloke” Collins with 63.25. A C grade event was introduced this year due to the size of the field. C grade was for handicaps 9.25 and over. Darren Andrews from Wynnum GC paired with Ben Harris to take out first place. Their score was 60.25 and easily beat home runner ups Dave Thomson and Paul Burke on 64.5. Congratulations to Jake Smith - his hole in one on the 2nd was the talk of the clubhouse after the round.

Sunday’s main event was the Singleton Open. The lowest handicapper in the field (-2), Brayden Peterson of Monash Golf Club shot a one over par round of 70 to successfully defend his title. The result could have been very different if local hero Nathan Bagnall had not have a birdie putt 360 the hole on the 17th green. Bagnall finished with a score of 70 and a count back saw him as runner up. On a day of very difficult scoring, Shaun Heffernan (Paterson GC) took out the A grade nett. His score of 69 was awarded the win by way of a count back from Nathan Bagnall. The B grade scratch winner was Rick Jannsen with a commendable 81, a score that beat many of the A graders in the field. Nett winner and runner up were Allan Piggot (68) and Rick Janssen (68) respectively. The C grade Open scratch winner was the big hitting Darren Thomson with a score of 86. The nett winner’s prize was awarded to Alf Buckley (66) from Darren Thomson (67).
