A life-like portrait of our Mayor, John Martin, had tongues wagging at the opening night of the 2016 Coal&Allied Singleton Art Prize. One could not help but notice the stunning replica of the man himself painted on textured marine-ply with oils.

Entered in the new ‘Something Singleton Category’ it was awarded second place. Talented local artist, Mitchell O’Mahoney, created the masterpiece, working only from a photograph and says he finds this easier than working with a live model. He honed his craft while living in Vietnam for 12 months where his wife taught English.
Mitchell now hopes to get back to his ongoing social media project – the portrait a week challenge – in preparation for an upcoming exhibition. Local doctor, Barry Thomas won the section with his painting, titled “Goorangoola”. Judge, John Haycraft said it was a very competent handling of a local scene. The multi-talented water colourist/architectural illustrator was clearly impressed with the standard of work. Attributing the consistently high standard to the generous prize money put forward by sponsor Coal&Allied. And, the winners of the were:
