Logistically it is a huge operation as each year around 16 000 books are collected, stored and sorted neatly into boxes. Then for three days the Singleton Public has access to a wide variety of books for incredibly low prices. And, when the annual Lions Book Fair is all over the profits are donated to two local charities – the Singleton Cancer Appeal and Singleton Family Support. They also distribute the appropriate excess books to local nursing homes, and for the first time a charity called ‘Books for the Outback’.

So who better than to assist the Lions Club with this huge undertaking than the lads from the Singleton School of Infantry. With their muscle, and the members of the Lions club experience, it doesn’t take them long to relocate the many boxes from a NAA store room to the Pavilion. However, volunteers will work right up until the opening at 9am on Thursday to get everything ready. Lions Club treasurer, Judy Langbien says the book fair is their biggest fundraiser.
“During 2014/15 we donated $32,500 to local groups and last year we made $8500 from this event but the fair would not be possible if it was not for the generosity of the Singleton community, who donate all the books,” she explains.
