Singleton Youth Venue has hosted a free tutoring program over the past four years which has provided students with assistance in areas such as math, English and science.
The program initially began thanks to the generosity of volunteer and Glencore employee Catherine Harrington, offering her skills and expertise in math.
Over the years, almost a dozen of Catherine’s colleagues, Rio Tinto employees and other community members with a passion for different subjects have volunteered and given their time at the Youth Venue.
Now with the relocation of many of the volunteers Singleton Council is looking to keep the program going in order to assist the young people of Singleton achieve their goals.
Singleton Council’s Director of Corporate and Community Services Group Anthony Egan says the program gives back in many ways to both students and volunteers.
“This program highlights the power of a community working together, sharing their strengths and knowledge with others for the benefit of young people and their families,” he says.
“I would encourage any person who thinks they may have knowledge to offer our local young people to contact the Youth Venue to discuss becoming a volunteer tutor.”
The tutoring program takes place on Wednesday’s at the Singleton Youth Venue between 4pm and 6pm.
Anyone interested in volunteering is invited to register by calling Reina Stalker at the Youth Venue on 02 6571 4687.
