The demanding competition assesses foundation war fighting ability, skills at arms, physical endurance and the mental resilience of soldiers from the competing sections of the Royal Australian Regiment.
It’s significance underlined by the presence
of Lieutenant General, Angus J. Campbell, DSC, AM, the Chief of Army.
However, there can only be one victor and this year’s winner of the Duke of Gloucester Cup is the 3rd Battalion of The Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR).
No doubt the unusually warm conditions would have suited the the light infantry battalion as they are based in Townsville, Queensland.
They were also awarded the Gurkh Trophy for best skills during live fire activities, the OSCMAR trophy for battle endurance and 3RAR’s Corporal Mark Visnyai received the champion rifle section commander.
The D.S.M Roche Memorial cup winner was Private Nixon from 2RAR. This honour is given to the soldier who displays the best individual skills.
The School of Infantry RSM, John Stonebridge says the winners (3RAR) will now go on to compete at the English version.
He says the first time Australia was invited to compete at the Cambridge Cup in 1993 they won.
